As animal charities local to Mazarron find that their traditional collecting and funding areas are being squeezed could this year see the beginning of the end of the animal charities and their good works as we know them?

Over the past couple of years we have seen unprecedented monetary pressures building as people’s disposable income and pensions have become squeezed by the financial pressures caused by the global recession, the unfavourable exchange rate, a lack of local work, price rises in essentials such as food and petrol and diesel costs, in fact most things needed to just get by.

 

To take one area as an example and one that most readers will instantly recognise as containing the very best of that great British tradition of support for animal charities, “Camposol” an area vital to all the charities but one in which all of the financial pressures above apply. For years this generous community has faithfully supported all the animal and rescue charities but as the need for individual and personal help grows, as we begin to see the population aging, manifested by increasing health problems are we seeing a switch in support and donations away from animal based charities towards more Humanitarian and Christian endeavours, it would appear that to a certain extent animals are being “squeezed” too.

The problems that the animal charities deal with have not disappeared in fact just the opposite, they are needed now more than ever, stretched to their limits financially they are finding that whilst the calls upon their services increase their traditional areas of income, mainly from donations to sell in the charity shops are fast disappearing.

 

Vets bills and kennel fees are massive as anyone with a dog or cat knows and yet these charities with their dedicated volunteers all do their best with what they have, to look after the injured, abandoned, unloved and unwanted animals that come into their care every week. Where once that piece of unwanted Masa furniture was donated to an animal charity, it can now become something of a dilemma for the donor as there could be up to twenty different charities, businesses, individuals or institutions all vying for its placement. This piece of furniture now has a value far beyond its unprepossessing appearance, as do all the clothes and books and bric a brac and clutter that you may be considering giving away.
